May update 2019

How did you manage?

By the time you read this article you are in the middle of your final GCSE and A-level exams. I am sure that all of you who worked hard and focussed that crunching time is a kind of relief. You have the opportunity to show your talent and that you are indeed the Master of the Universe. Anyway, keep your sanity and be resourceful with your personal energy balance. You can and will do it. Don’t forget to relax and look forward to your new life maybe as a University student, an apprentice or a college student. Whatever you do I wish you all lots of success, fun and enjoyment.

Current scientific facts of our new born lambs?

A pair of new lambs with their proud mother.

Our eleven ewes have given birth to twenty-one Shetlands lambs. Those new sweeties are racing across the field every evening. They are all absolutely beautiful and have a magnitude of energy you need at the moment for your exams. Their average acceleration is breath taking. They jump on the spot to about twice their height, about half a metre meaning they can generate 22.5Joules (GPE = 4.5kg x 10 N/kg x 0.5m) of Energy. This is approximately the amount of electrical energy a solar charger for smartphones produces. Not bad for a small lamb. These little power machines land with a speed of 3.2 m/s (v = √(2gh), maximum speed at free fall) equal to 7mph onto the ground. A safe parachuting landing speed is about 5mph. This proves that our lambs are superstars.

Finally, an appropriate scientific Quiz Question for the time of the year. Why is our sky blue and not black? If the sky is transparent, we should see a black colour like we do during the night. Please email the answer to railsfarm@phonecoop.coop.

I wish you all well-deserved Summer Holidays.
