Dorset Monsoon at Rails Farm
Since the drought finished the rainy season seems to be endless. As we did not have enough water we now have far too much to cope with. Hey ho, we shouldn’t complain and rather adapt to the situation. It can only get worse. Looking at the lack of commitment of all nations to reduce CO2 emissions, the average temperature increase, currently at 1.2 degrees Celsius, is going to rise beyond the critical limit of 1.5 degrees, where it becomes almost impossible to reverse the climate catastrophe. However, there is hope. The UN secretary general, Antonio Guterres is ringing the alarm bell, Sir David Attenborough is warning of irreversible loss of habitats and after a non-official U turn, our third prime minister in a very short time has agreed to fly to the COP 27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. When you read this article, we will know a little bit more about their further commitments. Let’s hope that the Brazilian prime minister elect Lula da Silva will stop the destruction of the rain forest. The industry needs to pass a significant threshold when only investment in green technology will lead to growth.
What can we do to go into the right direction?
Do your washing-up with cold water; do not rinse your plates before placing them into the dish washer. Only fill your kettle with the amount of water you need for your tea or coffee. Try to use your washing machine and dishwasher during the night to take pressure of the national grid and therefore the need to build new conventional power stations. Switch off all your appliances’ stand-by options. Keep to a speed limit of 55 to 60 instead 70 mph significantly reducing your fuel consumption due to reduced drag. Switch off your engine when you are waiting for someone, idling is neither good for the engine nor for children nearby.
Apple juice and cider
After we have filled our chest freezer with plenty of fruit and veggies, we are almost done with the glut of apples. 150 litres of cider is fermenting, about 100 litres of apple juice, several pounds of dried apple rings, apple stew and apple cakes.
